Many Canadians want MAID because of health care wait lists, terrible nursing homes, overcrowded hospitals and lack of elder care in Canada. The treatment of the old here is so abysmally uncaring and unresponsive. Socialized medicine isn't working and we are not allowed to use our own funds as we see fit.
My biggest fear is how far are they willing to go, to rid this country of not only the ill with no chance of recovery, but people who are disabled whether that be physically or mentally, people like my grandson who happens to be non-verbal and autistic. This is wrong on so many levels. Where is the line going to be drawn. I am thankful that we have never excepted any money from the government for the care of my grandson, and that he lives with us ,so we are the ones in control. I honestly fear for the people in any kind of care home.
Having worked as an oncology (cancer care),nurse in both Canada and the USA I believe that a major factor contributes to the difference in the assisted suicide rates between both countries Canada having the highest numbers.A diagnosis of cancer in the U.S. is treated much more aggressively and patients are considered palliative only when several interventions have proven to be unsuccessful.Here in Canada the medical system gives up on patients at a much earlier stage and once people are considered to be palliative they are more likely to use the MAID services as they feel there is no hope for a cure.
